OPEN DAY

Our annual Open Day was held on Saturday 2nd August 2003 when the bandroom was open to the public from 10.00am to 4.00pm.  Visitors were invited to look around the bandroom, try instruments, and talk to band members. Local primary and secondary school children were invited but disappointingly none attended.

The attendance on the day was very low but a young talented drummer came on the day and has since joined the band on kit.

LEARN TO PLAY IN A WEEK

"A novice musician has started to play tunes after just a week's tuition.  Luke Stovell (10) took the opportunity offered by Holbeach Town Band to learn an instrument in a week.  He chose to try the tenor horn.

Musical Director Mel Hopkin said 'Getting towards the end of the week he could play his first tune.'

Unfortunately for the band the idea didn't take off this year - the hot weather may be to blame - and Luke was the only person to come along.

The Learn to Play in a Week idea was first tried last year with great success.  This year just the one learner visited.  Mr Hopkin said 'It's very disappointing that only one person turned up.  We were hoping there would be about 15 people and could cater for up to 30 people.  I'm guessing the hot weather had something to do with it.  People would rather be outside than in a room learning a brass instrument.'

Mr Hopkin is undeterred and will run the week again next year.  The band also holds regular Wednesday learner sessions at 6.30pm at its headquarters in Back Lane, Holbeach."

We encourage people of all ages (from 8 upwards) to come to our bandroom every afternoon in the week when we teach them the basics of playing a brass band instrument.  This is from 2.00pm until 4.00pm every day.

Subject to availability, the instruments will be:

Over the week there will be a series of lessons on playing instruments; cleaning and maintaining them; reading music; playing rhythms; conducting.

At the end of the week each learner will be presented with a certificate and will be asked to complete a simple questionnaire.
