SGS Big Band
The Spalding Grammar School Big Band was formed
in the late 1980s from the more experienced members of the school’s Concert
Band. It was designed to introduce pupils to Big Band and Jazz styles of playing
with the opportunity for improvisation. The band has quite an extensive
repertoire and now includes traditional Big Band music together with Big Band
arrangements of more modern music.

The band has a traditional line-up of saxophone, trumpet, trombone and rhythm sections. The numbers in each section vary from year to year depending on what instrumentalists are available!
The band has always encouraged players from other local schools and has a number
of pupils of the Spalding High School as its regular members. Although the
majority of the players are in the Sixth Form studying for their ‘A’ levels,
the band also has many talented younger players. When the GCSE and A-level exams
start in June the older players leave school; fortunately, many of them are able
to return for the remaining concerts of the season.
Former players who have left school regularly return to play with the band which
is always a delight. The band holds occasional reunion concerts.
