Don Giovanni is an opera in two acts with music by Mozart
and libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte. The London Opera Players, who were
founded in 1950, and are accompanied by a live orchestra, will perform
Don Giovanni in English.
Set in Seville, this opera was based on the legendary story of old Spanish nobleman 'Don Juan' - he was a womanizer in the 17th century, and made his mark in countries around the globe, from Germany and Spain to France and Turkey. Don Giovanni was first performed in Prague, 29 Oct 1787. There are many famous arias within this opera, including 'La ci darem la mano', 'Finch'han dal vino', 'Il mio tesoro', and the so-called 'catalogue aria', 'Madamina!', in which Don Giovanni's servant lists all his master's sexual conquests (in Italy, 640; Germany, 231; France, 100; Turkey, 91; and in Spain,1,003). Mozart's 'Don Giovanni' expertly blends comedy, tragedy, and some of the most magnificent music ever composed. The Don commits murder, attempts multiple seductions, and is finally condemned to hell. A maze of secondary plot lines adds romance and humour,
while Mozart's music soars throughout. |
