12 November - Switch on Cristmas lights in Springfields
Christmas has started! We played tonight for the lights being turned on at Springfields Shopping Centre.
Springfields haven't had a Lighting-up evening for 6 years, so it was good to get back. Initially we were asked to play at 5.30pm before the lights were switched on at 6.00pm by actresses Shona Platt and Lou Micaelis from Corornation Street. Unfortunately, as a weekday, we could not get a band together at that time. The organisers kindly changed the times so we played from 7.00 to 8.00pm. We were due to play on the stage, but after the lights were turned on, the audience rapidly disappeared, and they started to demolish the stage! We ended up playing in the centre of the shopping area
We were booked play on the stage after the lights were turned on, but once the lights came on the audience disappeared. We ended up playing in the centre of the shops.
29 November - Winter Wonderland in Carters Park, Holbeach
The Winter Wonderland was organised by Holbeach Parish Council as a Christmas Shopping Day, but was held in Carter's Park. There were stalls and activities together with a loud speaker system. Unfortunately it was a cold and wet day - it had been raining heavily. The council provided a gazebo for us; they were due to provide chairs for us, they did not come but we were able to borrow some from another stall. We were playing next to where the queue to visit Santa's Grotto would have been if there had been enough people to form a queue. There were not many people in our part of the Park! We were playing against music blaring out of the PA system on one side, and music from Santa's Grotto on the other side.
One positive from the day was that we got our first contactless collection payments.
5 December - Concert at Tydd St Mary
Our annual trip to St Mary's Church in Tydd St Mary for our carol concert. The weather was not kind to us! There was very heavy rain as we arrived. Unfortunately there is very limited parking at the church, and we had three cars/vans full of percussion equipment. Some of us made several trips to carry the percussion into the church along the poorly lit church path - and got saturated!!
The church was full, despite the weather. We had 4 guest players, Martin and Philip on solo cornet, Denise on horn and Dale on Trombone.
This was a non-event We had booked with Lidl in September and completed their paperwork, but when we arrived we found the Rotary Club were already in our spot Discussion ensued with the Lidl Manager of the day who said the store had no knowledge of the band being booked in So we had to go home We returned to Holbeach Methodist Church for our Christmas concert We are always made very welcome.. We had a last minute issue when our tuned-percussionist couldn't make it We were short of front row cornets but had the help of 4 guest players, Martin and Philip on solo cornet, Dale on Trombone and a welcome return from Matthew Simons (on his Christmas break from university) covering the flugel part.
The South Holland District Council invited us to play carols at this Christmas event. We playedin Hall Place, Spalding next to the town's Christmas tree. We were only allowed to have two collectors but we had a couple of extra collecting buckets next to the band and we did quite well!
St Nicolas Brass organised carol-singing at Poppyfields, Spalding. There were 7 of us from Holbeach Town Band (1 conductor, 1 solo cornet, 2 2nd cornets, 1 solo horn, 1 2nd baritone and 1 Eb bass), 3 from Swineshead Silver Band (1 solo cornet, 1 2nd cornet and 1 euphonium), and 2 from Spalding Brass (1 solo cornet and 1 trombone).
