10 January 2009 - Band Party

The band resurrected its Christmass Party with a very pleasant evening at eh function room of the Red Lion in Holbeach. The evening was organised by cornet players Caroline and Adam. Musical Director Mel Hopkin thanked the organisrs. He also presented Euphonium newcomer Brian Parker with the Shield for the Musical Director's annual Award - Brian has only been playing for 18 months but has made excellent progress and is one of the most regular members at rehearsals and concerts.

11 March 2009 - Concert at Spalding Grammar School

The band's first concert of the new year was a great success. We played a joint concert in association with the Spalding Grammar School's Music Department. The concert was held in the school's assembly hall with the school's concert band and the school's Director of Music, Anthony Baldery. The Bands alternated playing - we opened the concert and played a couple of pieces; then the school band played and so on.

The audience was disappointingly small but the bands were well received.

Steven Butter is principal cornet in both bands and he also played a solo item with piano accompaniment - the Andante from Haydn's Trumpet Concerto in E flat accomanied on piano by Anthony Baldery. Musical Director Mel Hopkin played euphonium with the school band.

We ended the concert with the bands joining to Play the March from Holst's 2nd Suite if F Major. The band and school parts were in different keys, so we had re-arranged ours to match the school's. Anthony Baldery conducted the combined bands and Mel Hopkin played.

Our Programme

March of the Cobblers (traditional march featured in the film Brassed Off)
Journey through America (selection of traditional songs)
One Voice (by Barry Manilow)
Everybody Needs Somebody (from the Blues Brothers film)
Classical Gold (selection of exerpts of classical music)
Je T'Aime (infamous banned pop song)

Is this the Way to Amarillo (as performed by Tony Christie)

2 May - Spalding Flower Parade

Front row cornet players Steven Butter and Adam Wilson were delighted to be invited to play a fanfare for the Tulip Queen as she took her place on the Queen's float for the 2009 Flower parade. They then rode on the float and played fanfares throughout the parade. (The tunics were supplied by the Parade!).

3 May - Garden Party at Fleet

We were invited back to the Old Rectory at Fleet to play incidental music at an outdoor garden party. There was a very good attendance at the garden party; the weather was quite good but a bit chily. We played around the corner from the main activities! We had a reduced band as it was who enjoyed tea, beer and refreshments in the garden. We played from 2.00 to 4.00pm with a break.

10 May 2009 - Fosdyke Tractor Rally

We were pleased to support the annual Fosdyke tractor rally whose annual event raises funds the Macmillan Cancer care. We had a reasonable turnout and two of our young members, Thomas Cooper and Jimmy Hammond, made their first appearance with the band on 2nd Baritone.
