9 September - Patchett Lodge, Holbeach

A pleasant sunny Sunday afternoon playing an outdoor concert for the residents and staff of Patchett Lodge, Holbeach, (click for location map) togetheer with a few passers-by. We included items from our forthcoming Autumn concert, including extracts from Pomp and Circumstance, and Fantasia on British Sea Songs. Solos were confiently played by Steven Butter (cornet) and Dennis Skinner (Flugel Horn). The concert was very well received and we have been asked to return.

16 September - Skegness

Four of us went to Skegness to play with the Royal British Legion Band (Lincolnshire). We were accompanied by 5 players from Kirton Brass band and elsewhere. It was a sunny day but very windy - music and music stands where blown all over the place.

6 October - Cultural Festival

We were pleased to have a display at the Cultural Festival held at the Peele Community College, Long Sutton. It was a whole day event and there was traditional dances and music from: England, Ireland, Scotland, Poland, Latvia, China, India, Greece and many others.

We were represented by our musical director and band chairman. We had a display table where we had a cornet, tenor horn and euphonium, together with photographs, concert programmes, press cuttings, music and leaaflets about the band. Our area was very popular with visitors and we encouraged them to try the instruments, with a considerable amount of success. The local press photographers were there together with a local TV company who were interviewing all contributors (our visitors had to stop playing during the TV recordings). We had our photographs taken and were interviewed by the TV company.

13 October 2007 - Last Night of the Proms Concert

We were in top form for our annual autumn concert. The 'Last Night of the Proms' concert was held at the Holbeach Methodist Chapel to a large enthusiastic audience. We were joined by players from Spalding and Kirton bands.

The concert featured a solo by principal cornet Steven Butter who played a beautiful haunting melody Smaoinich. Flugel horn player Dennis Skinner played the jazz standard 'Misty'. Musical Director Mel Hopkin joined principal euphonium Yvonne Butter in the euphonium duet arrangement of 'Marching through Georgia'.

The band played a wide range of pieces including a selection of World War II songs, 'Any Dream Will Do' and 'Great Gate of Kiev'.

The highlight of the concert was the 'Fantasia on British Sea Songs'. Mel Hopkin reminded the audience that their participation was essential to the performance - mock tears are shed during Tom Bowling, feet are stamped during the hornpipe Jack's the Lad followed by the honking of hooters; solemn humming with Home, Sweet Home and then the whistling of the melody of Hail, The Conquering Hero. The audience enthusiastically joined in and got the band to repeat the hornpipe to great applause. By the time the band played Rule Britannia the Union Flags were waving.

This was followed by Pomp and Circumstance with the audience joining in again to sing 'Land of Hope and Glory' with much flag-waving. The concert ended in traditional style with 'Jerusalem', again with enthusiastic singing and more flag-waving by the audience.

The band had a standing ovation and were not allowed to leave without an encore.
